Album Review: Vulgar Display Of Power (1992)

For fans of: groove metal... and 'Walk'

Pantera - Vulgar Display Of PowerFollow-up to Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display Of Power moves Pantera's sound toward its ultimate level of brutality. CFH still had hints of their glam sound and the production was hollow. VDOP is thoroughly self assured, rich and very, very angry.

'A New Level', 'This Love' and the groove-metal-defining 'Walk' make the first half of the album sensational, but apart from 'Hollow' the second half merely good. There is plenty of great musicianship, and the drumming of the underrated Vinnie Paul is a special highlight.

An album of opposing forces, Vulgar Display Of Power is both an essential purchase and a waste of listening time in places. On balance the good songs far outweigh the drudge leaving the album an essential purchase.

Check out... 'Walk', obviously.
