Live Album Review: Live In Karlsruhe (Live)
For fans of: Hard Rock... and being good being bad
In our absolute stupidity here at Rock Realms we've only ever bothered listening to one Pink Cream 69 album; their latest studio release In10sity. It was a storming album with a bundle of great tracks and a stunning overall vibe. Therefore, we come to this live release with expectations sky high.
The members of Pink Cream 69 - David Readman (vocals), Alfred Koffler (guitars), Uwe Reitenauer (guitars), Dennis Ward (bass) and Kosta Zafiriou (drums) - are all at the top end of their respective games. The guys have worked separately and together on numerous other projects including Voodoo Circle, Place Vendome, Sunstorm and more. That brilliance certainly shines through on Live In Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe is the band's home town in the South of Germany).
The thing with this live album though, kind of weirdly, is that the brilliance is kind of a problem. The band are so good at doing what they do the record sounds like a rougher version of their studio work. It's good, don't get me wrong, but the passion and 'in10sity' you normally expect from a live release is in short supply. I want a live album to be a bit cr*p...but characterful because of that. Live In Karlsruhe is just too good, and therefore annoyingly characterless.
When it comes down to it I'd much rather listen to a Pink Cream 69 studio version. Live In Karlsruhe is nigh on perfect, but sometimes perfect simply isn't good enough.
