Album Review: Against All Good And Evil (2011)

For fans of: Melodic Death Metal

Prey For Nothing - Against All Good And EvilPrey For Nothing hails from the unlikely location of Northern Israel; not the most metal of places but it clearly works for these guys. The band's debut album "Violence Divine" came out in 2008 and to all intents and purposes did pretty well for itself.

"Against All Good And Evil" is the follow-up and sees the band moving from relative obscurity to the relatively sizeable Massacre Records. It's easy to hear why these guys got signed as there's a technical excellence to the playing, and they do a good job of doing their own thing style-wise.

The sound is somewhere in between Scandinavian and Polish melodic death metal, with a big element of prog thrown in for good measure...and maybe even a nod or two to math metal. The throaty vocals are more than up to the job, although the occasional clean singing is ordinary.

For me the songwriting is the only weak link. Whilst the performing is great, not a lot of it makes for catchy memorable tracks. The individual moments work well, but as whole songs or a whole album it's less successful.

In Summation:

For those who get a thrill from interesting well played music there's plenty to like here. If you want songs that get stuck in the mind, look elsewhere.
