PAY NO RESPECT - EP review added 29th September 2010
EP Review: Moving On EP (2010)
For fans of: Metalcore... and holding your head
Pay No Respect - Joe Kenney on vocals, Dan Kenney on guitar, Luke Raggatt on bass, and Guy Smith on drums - hail from Medway, Kent in the UK...and that's about all I know. There isn't a lot of information about them out there. Their MySpace site is devoid of anything useful, as is their Facebook page. All very secretive...
I see from another review this is not the band's first release. Said review was exceedingly positive about "Moving On", but for me there's not a lot to separate it from the crowd. The drums, bass and guitar conspire to make a monstrous sound, and it's all very well performed, but it's nothing I haven't heard before. Same with Joe's vocals. He sounds very good, but only in the same way that dozens of other hardcore and metalcore singers do.
The sound as a whole is a mix of bands like Biohazard and Stampin' Ground, mixing stop-start rhythms with enormous death howls and growling detuned guitar riffs. It's all perfectly agreeable, really good even, but at this stage of the game I want more. Bands have been making this noise for 20 years+. Retreading the same ground again and again is just unnecessary.
These guys have tons of talent and make a noise like an earthquake in Valhalla. Thing is I don't have any interest in listening to "Moving On" now I've finished the review. Pay No Respect need to get back to the drawing board and reinvent themselves; use their skills to make something we've never heard before. Then, and only then: they could be utterly awesome.
Check out... all of this, but you'll have heard it all before.
