Album Review: New Religion (2007)
For fans of: power metal... and Rob Halford
Sounding frighteningly like a Rob Halford project it comes as no surprise to hear that Primal Fear's lead singer, Ralf Scheepers, was in contention to replace him when he left Judas Priest in 1992.
If you can get past the obvious similarities, there is plenty to like. In fact I'd go as far as to say if Judas Priest still sounded this good they'd be a much better (recording) band than they are nowadays. At times New Religion gets astonishingly heavy. It never loses its melody though and remains a much better listen than many similar releases.
With several excellent tracks and an ultra smooth production sound, New Religion is a thoroughly likeable record. Shame it sounds so much like Judas Priest. To some people that alone will put them off, to others it'll be reason enough to buy it.
Check out... The bonkers combination of Rob Halford, er, I mean Ralf Scheepers and Simone Simons (from Epica) on 'Every time It Rains'.
