Album Review: To The Pit (2010)

For fans of: Brutal Thrash Metal... and greenish covers

The Prophecy23 - To The PitThe Prophecy23 - Dennis Lidak on guitar, Florian Sanden on drums, Hannes Klopprogge on guitar and vocals, and Tobias Scheid on bass and vocals - hail from Heilbronn in Germany.

To The Pit is the band's debut album and sees them treading a path well worn by groups from Testament to Job For A Cowboy. The comic artwork by Marvin Clifford ties in well with the none-too-serious persona of the band, but the music is all about the kicking of a*ses. Yes, some of the lyrics are deliberately silly and cheesy, but this album is as heavy as a tungsten avalanche. Its tongue-in-cheek ambience is still very welcome though.

The way The Prophecy23 combine elements of thrash, death and straight ahead heavy metal is expertly done. The album has a superb vibe and great musicianship, with the drums especially making a BIG impact. In fact the rhythm section is what makes To The Pit what it is. Whilst the guitars are cool and the deathly comic lyrics are top-fun, the pounding drums and monster bass give the album a whole extra dimension. F*ck knows how good they'll sound live, but I bet you'll need a hearing operation after seeing 'em.

The songs are of a consistently good standard. Nothing on the album is truly outstanding, although 'Damned Souls', '23 Thrash B.C.', 'Avoid Dull People' and 'Surf Nazis Must Die' arguably hold their heads a little higher than the others.

This is a good fun album with plenty of oomph behind it. Whether it'll stand the test of time - whether it'll hold attention once the novelty of the lyrics has passed - I don't know, but as a brief hit of enjoyment it works remarkably well.

Check out... The rhythm section.
