Album Review: White Album (2005)

For fans of: southern rock... and Black Stone Cherry's grandparents?

Rettig - White AlbumLos Angeles music scene stalwart Rettig has been selling out venues for two decades. Heard of him before? Nope, me neither. Shame really because he's rather good.

The music is akin to a quieter version of Black Stone Cherry... sung by a wizened country star in a smoke filled bar in a seedy neighbourhood. If The Eagles had sung the soundtrack to Smokey and the Bandit it might have sounded like this.

The songs go down the normal roads of loves lost and found and the emotional extremes of life. Think of it as campfire storytelling put to music and you won't be far off. 'Hell Hath...' is probably the best track, purely because it's such fun. Any song which explores the loss of John Wayne Bobbit and pokes fun at Bill Clinton is all right in my book. 'Black' is an intriguing number. Hard to work out if it's deeply annoying or wonderfully clever.

If you love country biased rock with a Southern twang, this will be right up your street. The quality is not up with the best of the best, but White Album is still very likeable.

Check out... 'Black'. Split decision or what?!
