Album Review: By The Way (2002)

For fans of: alternative rock... and young funk all grown up

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - By The WayThe 8th full album by Red Hot Chili Peppers, By The Way is a mature take on their earlier efforts. It's all the better for it.

They still manage their usual trick of including a few ropey old tracks, but the good songs are now more frequent and of a higher quality than before. The title track, plus 'Universally Speaking', 'The Zephyr Song', 'Can't Stop' and 'Tear' mark themselves out as the best listens.

This is barely a rock album. With deep melodies and subdued funk meanderings it almost sits in its own genre. However it is, in the most part, a great listen with only a couple of tracks that need skipping.

Check out... The intriguing 'Cabron' with its Mexican vibe. It's an interesting take on the usual Chilies sound.
