EP Review: New Love Designers EP (2009)

For fans of: Pop Rock.. and female vocalists

Roxy Swain - New Love Designers EPChicago band Roxy Swain get their name from lead singer Rachel 'Roxy' Swain. Completing the group is Tom Valenzano on guitar and vocals, Matt Walters on guitar, Melissa Kempfer on bass, and Chuck Harling on drums.

The sound is, for want of a better description, wet and poppy. There are hints of The Pretenders in there, but this is a much tamer sound than even Chrissie Hynde et al produced. Roxy has a decent enough voice, although it wants for character. Tom, singer on the second half of the EP is of a similar level: i.e. competent but unexciting,

The tracks don't do anything for me. Final entry 'Spread Eagle' isn't bad. It has a simplistic grungy sound that works well, but it still isn't anything other than basic fare.

Overall this is poor release full of short amateurish tracks. The guys are not untalented, but they need much stronger material than this if they want to get anywhere.

Check out... Something else.
