EP Review: Awakening EP (2011)
For fans of: Symphonic Prog Metal... and a touch of folk
Samandriel formed in 2008 and hail from Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. This self-released debut EP "Awakening" features founder members Ryan Hopper on bass and Oskar Jankovic on guitar, plus Jeff B.on keyboards, Jeff C. on drums, and Doneka (who has now apparently left the band) on vocals.
The sound is dominated by Doneka's symphonic/operatic vocals. One of the guys (it's not entirely clear who) adds death vocals, but those female leads really do stand out. I'm not sure how much I like her voice on "Awakening" as to my ears she's a touch too operatic to really fit in with the rest of the sound. Still, there's no doubting her skills.
The remainder of the music is a mix of prog, metal and folk. Think along the lines of Rush, Blind Guardian, and Skyclad and you'll be there. There are definite nods to thrash and power metal in the mix too. The musicianship - especially the guitar playing - is fantastic. Oskar is what I'd term an undiscovered star. Expect to hear more from him over the coming years.
Song wise, all the separate performances are fine, but together they are more impressive than memorable. 'Initial Reality' and 'Demise of the Icewitch' are the most instant and enjoyable tracks, but I have to say the sound is a tad samey throughout.
In Summation:
There's is nothing to hate here. The lead vocals will split opinion, the guitar soloing is awesome. As a whole the EP doesn't grab my imagination in the way I'd like it to. "Awakening" is good, but it isn't great.
