SATELLITES & SIRENS - review added 24th June 2010
Album Review: Satellites & Sirens (self-titled) (2010)
For fans of: Modern Rock... and poppy pleasantry
This eponymous debut album from Satellites & Sirens - Geoff Hunker on vocals, Jonathan Dimmel on drums, David Troyer on guitar, and Brandon Owens on bass/synth - is an interesting proposition. This is a young, confident sounding band with a refreshing take on modern rock.
There are definite pop hooks in the sound, and there are sweet melodies galore, but every song owes it's genesis to rock in one way, shape or form. Think of this as a more intelligent version of Busted/McFly, or a more radio-friendly version of Rooster and you'll definitely be along the right lines.
The band are described as Christian rockers, and they are perfectly open about the ways in which their beliefs influence their music. You wouldn't know unless you were told though as the lyrics are certainly not 'in your face'. The only thing I would say is that this is an overly friendly album that trades balls and grit for bounces and smiles. If you need cheering up this is a fine starting point!
Song-wise, this self-titled release is consistent from start to finish. It doesn't hit an huge highs but it manages the rare trick of being good in every track. 'All We Need Is Sound' is my favourite overall, but I'd be perfectly happy to hear just about anything from this release hitting the charts.
Overall, this is an excellent LP that promises a bright future from this U.S. band. This isn't the last you'll be hearing from Satellites & Sirens, that's for sure.
Check out... All of it.
