SKULL DAZE - review added 18th June 2010
Album Review: Skull Daze (self-titled) (2010)
For fans of: Sleazy Heavy Rock... and Eden's Curse
Italian band Skull Daze - Johnny Rainbow on vocals, Joey London on bass,
Acey Starlight and Danny Slade on guitars, and The President on drums - started in the summer of 2007. By late autumn that same year they had a 3 song demo (Sex Drugs & Rock ‘n Roll) out. Dangertainment, the band's first EP, followed in October 2008.
This eponymous full-length studio album sees the band signed to a label and pumping out a fine collection of tunes. The members may have made-up names, but the music is honest, loud and rocking.
The sound is a mix of sleaze, hard rock, metal and good old rock 'n' roll. It's like a mixture of Ratt, Helloween, and Guns N' Roses with a younger edge. Singer Johnny Rainbow sounds a lot like Michael Eden from Eden's Curse, although he's perhaps a couple of notches behind and often moves to the divide between 'okay' and 'characterful'.
There are plenty of good, catchy and memorable tracks on the album. None of them is amazing, but there is a consistent quality throughout and it's always tempting to put the album on for one more spin. 'Nothin'', 'Heartbreak City', 'Believe', 'Dirty Girl', and 'Nowhere To Run' are probably the best moments, although you could argue a convincing case for some of the other entries too.
I can imagine these songs will be a blast on the live stage. They are certainly entertaining on record, and there's plenty to like here for fans of the sleazier end of hard rock.
Check out... 'Nowhere To Run'.
