Album Review: Chaos A.D. (1993)
For fans of: groove metal... and New Model Army covers
If Arise was one of the best thrash releases, this was one of the defining groove metal albums. It may have been recorded in Wales, but there is so much Brazilian heat in this music it makes you want to samba.
'Refuse/Resist' and 'Territory' are huge and numerous other tracks are almost as good. The overall sound is more accessible than Arise, even though in places it's heavier. The addition of a rhythmic funk feel to their sound really pays dividends.
Sepultura's best album, Chaos A.D. will not be enjoyed by everyone. Even with their new-found groove this remains very, very heavy and gnarly. If you fancy trying something a little darker, though, this is as good a place to start as any.
Check out... The start of Propaganda. It's like the start of a war.
