Album Review: The Painful Side of True (2008)
For fans of: Alt Rock... and being a bit sad
Kentucky, USA, based four piece Sexstone play a music that is difficult to be happy around. Debut album The Painful Side of True (that follows 2008's EP Stripped) is about as jolly as its artwork would suggest. This really is music that makes a large tear roll down your cheek.
The band - Steven Bauer on vocals and guitar, Steve Wheeler on guitar, Trent Riley on bass, and Bryan Thomas on drums - are not without talent. They're never going to sell out stadiums and ravage charts across the globe, but they're okay. The music, however, does very little for me.
The album, including, "newly revamped plugged in versions of four tracks that appeared in acoustic versions on Sexstone’s teaser", is little more than one sorrow-filled track after another. If you are in the right mood - crying into your beer over a failed relationship - I suspect the band's sound will strike a chord. If, however, you feel like most people do most of the time, the music on The Painful Side of True is going to be a big depressing turn off.
This isn't a terrible album as such, but it's very outlook dependent. I'm happy at the moment. Therefore, I'm afraid, I don't like it.
Check out... Something a touch happier...
