SKULL FIST - EP review added 16th June 2010

EP Review: Heavier Than Metal EP (2010)

For fans of: Heavy Metal... and a trip down retro lane

Skull Fist - Heavier Than Metal EPSkull Fist, from Toronto in Canada, are another of these new bands which play music with writing and production trapped in a time period 25 years ago.

The Heavier Than Metal EP harks back to vintage Iron Maiden and, well, any other early-to-mid 1980's heavy metal band you care to mention. You know what? They actually do a reasonably good job of impersonating that retro style, but do we really need music that is purposefully under-achieving?

The production levels are so (deliberately) low that the album can be an uncomfortable listen. Saying that, the performances and the songs themselves are full of passion and energy.

As a whole the EP is a fun listen, but only if you pretend it was released in 1982. Compare this to music recorded with modern production techniques, heaviness and speed and it sounds weak-willed and apologetic. Trivium would kick Skull Fist's asses into the middle of next week.

If you like your metal retro you'll love this. If you like your metal modern, you'll hate it with a passion. Me? I'll pass thanks.

Check out... Something a little more modern.
