SHAW BLADES - stub review added 2nd December 2008
Album Review: Influence (2007)
For fans of: rock covers... and not so rocking covers
Something of a miniature super group, Shaw Blades features the talents of singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw and singer/bassist Jack Blades. This is a collection of covers the guys have recorded as a tribute to the bands and songs that 'influenced' them as their careers developed. Clever name huh?
Although a likeable album, there isn't anything groundbreaking here and in many cases the original song hasn't been changed as much as it could or should have been. Shaw and Blades have done a fine job of choosing apt songs to fit their style. They've produced a warm feel good album with much to like.
This is all perfectly agreeable and it's hard to say anything negative about the project. The only downside is the lack of change over the original tracks. With a tad more experimentation the end result wouldn't have sounded quite so much like (admittedly brilliant) superstar karaoke.
Check out... Just how close many of these songs are to the work of the original artist.
