Album Review: Slave To The Grind (1991)

For fans of: hard rock... and songs about primate poop

Skid Row - Slave To The Grind2nd album by the New Jersey band, Slave To The Grind features several massive tunes including the title track, the riff-tastic 'Monkey Business' and the clever yet beautiful 'Quicksand Jesus' and 'In A Darkened Room'. The sound is mostly heavy with hints of funk, but Skid Row aren't afraid to slow things down or add extra melody where needed. This is brash over the top hair metal for sensible intelligent grown ups.

A few lesser songs conspire to spoil the flow of an otherwise great release, but the end result is still not that far short of spectacular. This is music that hasn't and probably never will date. It takes the best parts of several rock genres and fuses them seamlessly, leaving what can only be described as an essential purchase.

Check out... The flip from acoustic intro to metal mayhem in 'Monkey Business'. Oh, and the cover art which was by lead singer Sebastien Bach's dad.
