Album Review: Christ Illusion (2006)

For fans of: thrash... controversial songs about 9/11

Slayer - Christ IllusionThe 9th studio album by Slayer and the one that welcomes the return of Dave Lombardo, Christ Illusion is even more thrashy than God Hates Us All and really does mark a return to Slayer's roots.

This may not be up there with Reign In Blood et al, but it isn't too far off in terms of raw sound. The album has a great vibe and some of the riffs sound sensational. However the overall execution is a let down and the lack of memorable tracks (apart from the brilliant 'Eyes Of The Insane') is a travesty.

This is simply Slayer playing the sound the fans love, but the band seem content to retread old ideas rather than find new ones. Yes, the style is now back as it should be, but where is that compulsive nature their music used to have?

Check out... South Of Heaven instead.
