Album Review: Dirty Drinks And One Night Stands (2009)
For fans of: Punk Rock... and rough 'n' ready sounds
Norwegian punk rockers Slömber began back in 2004. They started out playing covers but gradually transformed into an 'originals' band. Hell, they even have their own record label nowadays.
The line-up has changed over the years and at present consists of the following amusingly named bunch: Eddie D'Lizard on bass, Vinnie Trashcan on guitars, CoolCat Casey on drums, Randy Roxxx on lead guitars, and Billy McBarbie on vocals.
Dirty Drinks And One Night Stands follows their debut EP from 2007, Fire in the Jailhouse. The sound is loose, live-esque and as sleazy and punky as a Johnny Rotten wearing suspenders and a blonde wig. This is not a beautifully produced or performed album, but it's very atmospheric, passionate and characterful. It really is like being at a live gig - minus the screams and shouts of an audience. Slömber is blatantly built around the live arena, so it's only fitting that their studio work captures the stage show as closely as possible.
The songs blend into each other, but not necessarily in a bad way. Dirty Drinks And One Night Stands is a non-stop high-adrenaline gig-on-a-disc. It's not about pleasing hair-splitting critics or pandering to musicianship-junkies. This album is about getting over Slömber's message in as lairy and loud a way as possible. They achieve that well.
If you want to re-live the rougher side of Guns N' Roses and the saner side of The Sex Pistols, I reckon this album is worth a look. No, it isn't technically brilliant, and it isn't really my thing, but I know a lot of people are going to love it. You probably already know if you are one of them.
Check out... Slömber live. That's what this band is all about - the stage.
