Album Review: Toxicity (2001)

For fans of: alternative metal... and insanity

System Of A Down - ToxicitySo unfathomably clever they can often be stupid and annoying, the songs on Toxicity are as varied as a bag of pick 'n' mix. Featuring less full-on metal than the debut, this album nevertheless has a similar concept of experimental madness.

'Chop Suey' is a fine track, as is 'Aerials', but there's barely anything else that's memorable... not for a positive reason anyway. Most of the tracks are annoying, poorly disguised attempts at recreating the excellence of the first release.

A difficult listen, Toxicity has many flashes of genius but repeats each of them ten times to make sure you get the message. They drew the line with their first album, then crossed it with this one. They really shouldn't have.

Check out... The tribal bit on the end of 'Aerials'. It's kind of fun in a Lion King way.
