SEVENTH RIZE - review added 19th January 2010
Album Review: Full Moon (2009)
For fans of: Hard Rock... and Thunder-isms
Texan group Seventh Rize has been around since the end of 1991. They are a band big on touring, apparently averaging over 200 shows per year. It wasn't until 1995 that they started writing original music. Clearly not a band to do things by half, they constructed their own studio, 'Dean O’s'.
In 1999, drummer/producer/author Bobby Rock (Nelson, Vinnie Vincent Invasion, Hardline) offered the band a production deal for their debut album. Visceral Rock, ended up being recorded at Studio 14731 in Los Angeles and featured guests like Bob Kulick, Brett Garsed and Neil Zaza. It was released in 2000 to enthusiastic reviews.
After several years in the wilderness following what the band describe as "Signing an infamous 'Indie Deal Gone Bad'”, Full Moon finally sees Seventh Rize putting out the follow-up. The line-up on the album is Stacy "Big Daddy" Humphries on vocals, Jerry Stone on guitars, David Hamilton on bass and Sulli on drums.
I haven't heard the original release so cannot compare this to that. However, the sound on Full Moon is decent if uncomplicated. This is straight ahead heavy rock 'n' roll, obviously born in the live shows the band play so many of. It's going to sound great on stage. On record it sounds above average, if not amazing. Good moments include the groovy 'Torn', the solo section in 'Grey', the acoustic ballad 'One Last Time', and the Thunder-alikes 'I'll Be There' and 'Measure For Measure'.
I don't dislike this album, but it doesn't excite me as much as I hoped it would. It's all very pleasant, inoffensive and well performed...and merely falls down a few steps on lack of absolute wow factor.
Check out... Their first album as comparison.
