Album Review: Stratovarius (Self Titled) (2005)
For fans of: power metal... and bands whose members have 'personality'.
Quite different from their normal style this Stratovarius release may not appeal to diehard fans, but it isn't without its merits. Viewed as a standalone album it's rather likeable.
The first track 'Maniac Dance' is so contagious it needs a health warning. It really is one of those songs that'll stick in your mind for ages. Nothing else on the album quite matches it, but 'Back To Madness', 'Gottdammerung (Zenith Of Power)' and 'The Land Of Ice And Snow' have a good stab.
Their over the top theatrical opulence may have been toned down on this eponymous release, but Stratovarius have still produced a decent album. This'll be right up the street of rockers who like classic European metal with a flamboyant twist.
Check out... 'Maniac Dance'. One of the best crazy tracks ever, even if does have a three year old playing morse code at the start.
