Album Review: Paradise Lost (2007)

For fans of: prog metal... and continental sized production

Symphony X - Paradise LostThis album is noticeably prog biased, although it would be unwise to compare it directly with bands like Dream Theater. Symphony X's style is more closely related to European power metal, but with another level of complexity in the time signatures and a greater depth of musicianship. There is a theatrical element in the mix too, like the band long to write a film score.

Paradise Lost is not an easy listen. There is plenty of good sh*t to be extracted if you put the hours in, and nobody could accuse the band of lacking talent. The main problem is simply the lack of accessibility.

Paradise Lost is an amazing album, but whether you will enjoy comes down to want you want from an album. If you want technical prowess you could worship you'll love it. If you want something to jump about to and an album that'll put a big smile on your chops then, for the love of God, look elsewhere.

Check out... The intro. It sounds the the start of a comedy horror film, possibly made by Disney.
