Album Review: New Beginning (2011)

For fans of: Heavy Metal

S.Y.F.T. - New BeginningSeattle’s S.Y.F.T. released their debut album "Last Chance For A Legacy" a few years back. "New Beginning" is the follow-up.

The sound is grungy underproduced heavy metal with a very obvious dirty, naturalistic feel. They really remind me of UK metallers Long Time Dead, especially their song 'Half-Cocked Smile'. Just like LTD, S.Y.F.T. are a band that'll work much better on the live stage than on album. This is music with a ferocious energy. and though it does come across on LP, you really need to be there getting covered in sweat and blood to truly appreciate it.

...And that's about it really. If you plan to see this band live (and reports suggest you really should), buy this album so you know their songs. If you don't want to see them, I'd be inclined to pass this by as it's all just too raw for it's own good. Still, it's kind of characterful too...so it may well appeal to some.

In Summation:

Good songs hidden behind a mask of live unproduced energy. Listen to these guys in a venue somewhere if you get the chance.
