EP Review: City Of Sin EP (2010)

For fans of: Alt Metal... and loads of falling leaves

Thousand Autumns - City Of Sin EPHertfordshire, UK, act Thousand Autumns - Josh Fox on vocals, Alex Williams and Rob Jenkins on guitars, Sam Lidington on drums, and Tom Newman on bass - only formed in March 2010, so they clearly haven't messed about getting their debut four track EP ‘City of Sun’ out already. Even better, they are offering the EP as a free download...although you'll need to pay if you want the physical CD, which seems more than fair.

The sound is bright modern alt metal with creamy vocals, impressive guitar passages, vibrant rhythms, big hooks. Even the occasional throaty vocals come across well.

Good:

All of it really. Little of the EP is exceptional, but there isn't any facet of the band's creative output which isn't at the very least 'good'. And you can't say that too often.

Not So Good:

The album artwork is arguably a tad unconnected with the title, but perhaps I'm missing something...

The Songs:

It's easy to imagine the aggressively spunky title track gaining plenty of airplay. To be honest, if the band can come up with a song this good in only a few months, just imagine what they may achieve a few years down the line...

'Terrified' is a tad heavier, mixing singing and screaming with real aplomb. 'Sent To Erase' is another notch up the gnarly scale, but is still as accessible as an open door. Final track 'I Chose Not To Remember' is more pop-orientated - think McFly in a bad mood - but still works well. Actually, very well indeed.

In Summation:

This is a band to watch, be in no doubt. The full album (when it comes) could end up being rather splendid.
