Album Review: Recipe For Disaster (2010)
For fans of: Prog Metal... and beautiful madness
The first incarnation of Danish-based progressive metal act Third Eye started back in 2003, although it wasn't until after the recording sessions for Recipe For Disaster that the current line-up of Per Johansson on vocals, Thomas Kuhlmann on and Michael Bodin on guitar, Martin Damgaard on drums, Andreas Schumann on bass, and Simon Krogh on keyboards was finalised.
The band have taken two years from starting the record to getting it out. Boy was it worth the wait!
The sound is dominated by thunderous drums, superb progressive guitar riffage and Per Johansson's cataclysmic vocals. It's progressive metal but not as you know it. In places it really is stupendously heavy, but there's subtlety, intelligence, brooding anger and genuine skill on show. More importantly, huge chunks of the record are unbelievably catchy too. Most prog records are built to be savoured. This is built to be rampaged to by someone dancing round their house bouncing off the walls and ceilings.
There is little point picking out best moments because it's all bone-crunchingly brilliant, although 'Dark Angel', 'Six Feet Under', and 'Snake In The Grass' are maybe a bluebottle's-cock-width ahead.
We get so many albums to review here at Rock Realms, I have to say this album almost passed under the radar. I'm glad it didn't... This really is a lesson in how to catch the attention of the listener without resorting to cliched nonsense. Third Eye have produced something thoroughly left field, and thoroughly superb. I can't recommend this album enough for fans of heavy prog and heavy metal. This is rarefied brilliance.
Check out... All of it.
