Album Review: Return To Evermore (2004)

For fans of: hard rock... and minstrel metal

Ten - Return To EvermoreTen's 7th studio album, Return To Evermore sees a change of style from the previous couple of albums. 'Babylon' and 'Far Beyond The World' were heavy albums with a warm metal timbre. This release is noticeably softer and, in places, more folk orientated. It still rocks though, just in a different way.

The songs are a mixture of good and not so good. The first track is pretty awful and gives a sense of foreboding about the rest of the album. Fortunately it's uphill from there. 'Evermore' sounds similar to Gary Moore's 'Over The Hills And Far Away' with its obvious Celtic influence. 'Even The Ghosts Cry' is spunky and upbeat sounding, yet the lyrics will make you want to shoot yourself. 'Stay A While' is Ten's best ballad ever.

This album is a real grower. It does have a few songs you may want to skip, but the best tracks are as good as anything Ten have ever recorded. On balance Return To Evermore is another Ten Album that misses out on greatness only by a whisker.

Check out... 'Strangers In The Night'. A lovely slow, yet heavy ballad.
