EP Review: The Last Stand EP (2010)

For fans of: Metalcore... and bad days for architecture

Terakai - The Last Stand EPReading, UK, five-piece metalcore act Terakai - Tom Grepne and Cameran Turner on guitar, Joe Knipe on vocals, Chris Dodd on bass, and Adam Lewin on drums - only formed last year, yet they've already gone through the heartbreaking destiny of so many rock-bands and lost a member.

Guitarist Matt Dodd died in his sleep in early March 2010 at the age of just 18. Fortunately for us - the rock 'n' metal fans - the band decided to carry on. I say fortunately, because these guys are one of the most promising metalcore bands around at present.

The sound is a maul-icious combination of broken beats, rumbling bass, downtuned guitars and really rather excellent vocals. In fact the demonic howls of Joe Knipe are right at the top end of what I've heard this year. So many metalcore/death metal singers sound like someone doing unspeakable acts to a wild boar. Joe actually sounds genuinely nasty...and not at all comedic...which is a good thing. His clean vocals are arguably a little boy-band-ish, but we'll let him off.

It's hard to pick between the tracks because they are all - even the intro - top notch. Yep, this is a fine release and bodes well for a full length album. I'd perhaps like to see more variety and even more heaviness on a proper studio LP, but as far as EPs go this is spot on.

Check out... All of it.
