Live Album Review: Alive In Europe! (Live) (2010)

For fans of: Hard Rock... and wishing you were there...

Tesla - Alive In Europe! (Live)Tesla, going for 25 years and with 12 albums and collective sales of over 16 million, is a band that has never really clicked with me. I totally respect their talents, but they and I have never really seen ear-to-speaker.

I therefore came to this live release without a huge amount of anticipation. If a band - in this case Jeff Keith on vocals, Frank Hannon and Dave Rude on guitars, Brian Wheat on bass, and Troy Luccketta on drums - don't do a lot for me with their studio albums, their live efforts generally don't do anything to change my mind.

However, this is different. It still isn't going to make me love them outright. Jeff Keith's vocals are still very much an acquired taste and the songs I can take or leave, but the way these guys deliver their material is beyond first class. The way they recorded and produced the performances - actually at various shows across Europe - is stunning too.

I love the sound of the guitars, which really are chuffing heavy in places! The passion these guys put into their performances comes across beautifully. Compare this to the recent live release from Extreme...this one is in a different league. Best song for me is the monstrous 'Breakin’ Free', but I suspect everyone will get something different from the album.

Okay, it's cheating taking the best songs from several different shows and splicing them together, but who cares?! It sounds like a live album, and comes across like a superb show you'd have died to be at. Isn't that what matters?!
