Album Review: Subsurface (2004)

For fans of: prog metal... and strangely arty album covers

Threshold - SubsurfaceAlthough Threshold are a heavy prog band playing complex disjointed metal tracks, Subsurface doesn't owe a huge amount to the sound of bands like Dream Theater. Threshold play on a more epic theatrical scale, helped in no small part by singer Mac's grandiose vocal style.

Subsurface is accessible... as far as this sort of thing goes. Problem is most of the tracks are not that memorable. They may be wonderfully constructed and brilliantly performed but, apart from 'Flags And Footprints' and 'The Destruction Of Words', you forget what you heard as soon as the song finishes.

A technically great album that will be fondly looked upon by prog fans and frowned upon my most others, Subsurface is okay but nothing more.

Check out... The first vocal section of 'Mission Profile' is pretty handy.
