Album Review: The Crusade (2006)
For fans of: thrash... and album covers with demonic warriors taking their dog for a walk
Trivium's 3rd album and their first full thrash assault after their beginnings as a metalcore band. This may be a change of style but arguably it's one for the better. Corey Beaulieu and Matt Heafy have more chance to show off their abundant technical skills with thrash, and boy do they do so.
The sound is very much like old Metallica, although not done so well. There is no doubting the talents of the guys in Trivium, but many of the songs are more about noise than melody. The songs also aren't THAT heavy. They are very thrashy and fast, but the depth of heaviness is often notable by its non-appearance.
The Crusade is a good-ish album with much to like, but after a few listens it'll probably end up getting dusty on a shelf. As a sign of things to come though it gets a massive thumbs up.
Check out... 'Anthem (We Are The Fire)'. Very commercial and silly but brilliant fun.
