Album Review: Judgement Night (2011)

For fans of: Heavy Metal

Twins Crew - Judgement NightWe last visited Swedish heavy/power metal outfit in 2009 for their second EP "Twin Demon". "Judgement Night" is the band's debut full-length and continues (and builds upon) their previous efforts. That means a load mix of Maiden-esque riffs, Dragonforce-esque solos and insert-power-metal-band-here-esque vocals. Yes, there is a lot of esque-ing on this album, but it's bloody enjoyable all the same.

If everything derivative and heard-it-all-before was this good and fresh sounding, the world would have no problem with copycats. Barely a minute goes by on "Judgement Night" without a soundbyte that brings to mind another band. However Twins Crew really don't copy as such. It's more that they give big nods to their heroes, doing so with a slug of originality too. Yes, there is way too much Iron Maiden in the mix, but there's no way you'd mistake this band for the English veterans; and that's not to belittle the Swedish guys. It's simply that they sound utterly different at the same time as sounding the same. Confused? Good...

The album is crammed full of top musicianship - especially those solos - and the production is damned good for an independent release too. Song wise, there's not much to choose between them. The album is good 'n' solid from start to finish, although 'Light' and 'My Heart Is Burning' arguably take the biscuit as best in class.

In Summation:

This is a fine heavy metal album. It isn't groundbreaking, but it does more than enough to be worth a purchase.
