EP Review: Twin Demon EP (2009)

For fans of: Heavy Metal... and Iron Maiden crossed with Judas Priest

Twins Crew - Twin Demon EPTwins Crew was formed in 2005 by 5 friends who attended the same high school gymnasium in Nynäshamn, Sweden. Back then the band was called Lost Spirits, but soon gained the moniker we see today. The guys went their own ways when school finished, but Dennis and David Janglöv, after attending a music institute in America, restarted it and the line-up we see today was pieced together in 2007.

An eponymous EP was recorded in January 2008. The Twin Demon EP follows that debut with a more polished sound and another year of experience under their belts.

The sound is tungsten-infused heavy metal with obvious hints of Maiden and Priest. It's a lot less derivative than it could have been and comes across bloody well. The production is superb and gives the sound a mid-oceanic depth. The performances are way above average and it's hard not to be impressed, especially with the tone of the guitars and bass.

The opening track is merely an intro, so the first true song is the title track. The initial guitar riff and double kick drums will put shivers down your spine. The moment the vocals come in is less successful, and the chorus is as cheesy as a Gouda sandwich, but you've got to love the pumping ferocity of it all. 'Legions Of The Dead' is a lighter and faster track that proudly references Helloween. It's an energetic number and, yes, you've heard it all before... but you can't deny the prowess these guys show.

'Heavy Metal Nation' is an anthemic track sitting somewhere between Dream Evil and Iron Maiden. It's a proper old-skool fist pumper and is as unashamedly retro as nuclear stand-off and sexism. 'Fire Of Anger' is heavy with a capital f*ck off. The kicks, the bass, and the achingly booming guitars are just awesome. It races along like a truck with no brakes and sounds like Firewind playing Trivium at a teenage party. Final track 'The End Of Forever' is another express-train of a song. It sounds great, but again isn't massively memorable.

The story of this EP is average songs performed brilliantly. With better material Twins Crew could be battling the big boys. Their sound is nigh on perfect and there's clearly talent to spare. As the phrase goes... watch this space.

Check out... The sound quality. We like.
