Album Review: Stand Up (2011)

For fans of: Rock

The Vagrants - Stand UpWell, this is a pleasant surprise. It isn't big, it isn't that clever, but it's a lot of fun...and that stands for a lot when you're deciding which album to buy.

Australian act The Vagrants have been around for several years and already have a few discs under their belts. I haven't heard any of their earlier work but that probably doesn't matter. This album stands on it's own two feet so well it wouldn't matter if one or one hundred albums had come before it.

The Vagrants play good honest music somewhere in the midst of heavy pop, rock, and hard rock. Renate Ludwig has a super-strong female rock voice. The remaining guys are all clearly bloody good on their instruments. The songs are catchy, bright and unapologetically beat-filled and loud. Even better, there's barely an AC/DC riff in sight. The best tracks are the three live efforts, but that's not to take anything away from the others. "Stand Up" is strong and pleasant-to-the-ears from start to finish. And we like it a lot.

In Summation:

I only reviewed this by chance and I'm glad I did. If you like good does-what-it-says-on-the-tin female-fronted rock with an accessible heavy edge, you'll love this.
