Album Review: 5150 (1986)

For fans of: hard rock... and bands who replace their lead singer and still sound great

Van Halen - 5150Singer David Lee Roth was the larger than life central floor show of Van Halen, so when he left the only way for the band seemed down. Somehow, against the forces of logic, in Sammy Hagar they found someone who was equal if not better.

5150, his first album with the band, is a stunning collection of upbeat party anthems and ballads. 'Why Can't This Be Love', 'Dreams' and 'Best Of Both Worlds' are brilliant, but 'Love Walks In' is the real star of the show. It has a wonderful dreamy vibe and beautiful sing along lyrics.

Arguably Van Halen's best album, even if earlier tracks like 'Jump' and 'Eruption' are more famous. There isn't a duffer on 5150. The only criticism you could level it at is about the large amount of keyboard use. For me it simply isn't a problem.

Check out... 'Love Walks In'. Amazing.
