EP Review: Falling Knives EP (2011)

For fans of: Modern Hard Rock

Voodoo Six - Falling Knives EP"Falling Knives" by British band Voodoo Six is a limited edition EP only available digitally and only until the end of February. Following "Fluke?" (2010) which was engineered by Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Aerosmith, Metallica), this new EP features three brand new tracks and three re-worked versions of tracks from their debut "First Hit For Free" (2008).

The band's sound is a rough-around-the-edges take on modern hard rock boasting the raw energy of 1970s bands, a surprisingly heavy edge at times, plus an accessible, almost indie-pop feel to some of the guitars. The result feels very trendy and unusually cool for what is essentially tarted-up old man's rock. These guys are a blast on the stage and that feeling really comes over on the EP. "Falling Knives" works well at any volume, but it really makes sense when your speakers have smoke pouring from them.

Of the new tracks... The title track is a bouncy affair with a Southern US rock charm about it. 'Sharp Sand' has an unnecessarily cool chorus and has chart-botherer written all over it. 'Stop' has a good groove running beneath it. It's a fine track, but not as instant as the first two.

Of the re-hashed tracks... 'One More Day' is solid but doesn't do a lot for me. The grunge vs. Aerosmith feel of 'Feed My Soul' isn't quite my thing either. The heavy 'No Friend of Mine' is much better though, rounding the EP off with some proper power.

In Summation:

The good news from this EP is that the new songs are the best ones. Not everything is successful, but you've still got to take your hat off to these guys for their ability to create genuinely exciting sounds.
