Album Review: The Crimson Idol (1992)

For fans of: heavy metal... and thoroughly depressing concept albums

W.A.S.P. - The Crimson IdolLook in the sleeve of The Crimson Idol and you'll find the story behind the music. The tale is enthralling and gives you high hopes for a great album.

Sadly the music doesn't do the words justice. I say music, but the album tends to flit between loud noise and quiet noise. There really isn't a lot that's musical about it. 'Chainsaw Charlie' is pretty good, but even it outstays its welcome by going on way too long.

The Crimson Idol is mostly a self-indulgent waste of ear-time. The story is great, the execution is not. Blackie Lawless may have been spilling his heart with this album, but I'd rather he'd kept it to himself.

Check out... W.A.S.P. live instead. This music is awful on album but pretty decent live.
