Album Review: Weaponhead EP (2008)

For fans of: metal... and ?

Weaponhead - Weaponhead EPWeaponhead are an Australian group consisting of the inspiringly named Boris, Dave, Steve and Drew. They play a heavy rock/metal crossover music with V-8 pace and bags of personality.

The opening track 'the March Of Misery' has overtones of vintage Metallica in the drumming, but with a modern rock'n'roll vibe laid over the top. There's hints of metalcore in the mix too. The singing sounds drunken and appalling to start with, but soon finds its footing and gains a great character. The song's as schizophrenic as a mental patient with a spare brain in his pocket, but energetic and full-fat-fun.

'Bleed' is a fine track. It does nothing outstanding but manages to keep the album moving along at a steady pace. 'Can't Release The Pain' raises the game a few notches. The drumming is again the driving force behind the character of the track. This is a song you could easily imagine, if it had a decent video, getting good rotation on MTV or the like.

The remaining two tracks don't do a lot different to the first three. They are solid additions but certainly not exceptional.

This eponymous EP is a good release but doesn't rewrite any rule books. It sounds good and has a few flashes of future potential on it. The performers are all clearly talented. All they lack at the moment is the consistently to produce top-drawer songs. If they get that nailed, Weaponhead could go places. If I could give them three and a half R's I would. As it is... I can't... so three it is!

Check out... Their first full length album, whenever it appears.
