Album Review: Surgical Smile (2010)

For fans of: Alt Rock... and singing drummers

Weapon Head - Surgical SmileAustralian band Weapon Head - Steve Bishop, Dave Bishop, Boris Billing, and Drew Allen - already have a self-titled EP under their belts. Surgical Smile looks to continue the upbeat reception the EP received.

You know what? I don't see anything changing. This is a great, very interesting album with a relatively unique vibe and bags of personality. Surgical Smile doesn't follow the pack and it's all the better for it. Yes, there are hints of other bands in there, but rarely for more than a few fleeting seconds.

Weapon Head change styles at will, crossing between pop, rock, metal, grunge, and more. It should be as confusing as a pink rabbit but it isn't. It serves to keep the album fresh and exciting throughout. The fact a couple of the songs are proper-massive helps too, although as balance a few tracks do pass by anonymously.

Best moments include the opening, racy little number 'Bullshit Has No Sound', the Limp Bizkit-baiting 'Got No Mercy', the utterly brilliant 10CC-inspired title track, the understated and darkly interesting 'Charade', the epic 'Let Go', and the cool-ish cover of John Lennon's 'Cold Turkey'.

Overall this is a really fine album. It isn't immeasurably great, but Weapon Head have to be commended for doing their own thing and making a success of it. Yeah, this is a good stuff.

Check out... All of it.
