Album Review: How Did It Get To This (2009)
For fans of: alternative rock... and attitude with a capital f*ck off!
Right, let's not mess about here. I absolutely categorically hated this album the first time I heard it. I wanted to cut off my big toes and shove them in my ears, pour lighter fluid on my speakers and throw them on the top of a live hand grenade.
However... after several increasingly painless listens, and numerous decreasingly violent attempts at preventing the sound entering my skull, I must admit I am rather enamoured by it now.
We Rock Like Girls Don't is Ros (guitars and vocals) and Vas (drums and vocals). Yes, they are girls, and, yes, their name is, to an extent, fairly accurate. We Rock Like Girls Don't Do Normally, Although Some Have Been Known To On The Odd Occasion... would have been a little closer to the truth, but we'll let them off for now.
The sound has the simple anarchic ferocity of the White Stripes and vintage Therapy?, blended with hints of L7 and Siouxsie And The Banshees. There's plenty of punk attitude in the lyrics too. "Violence is what happens when language fails," is the bombastic mission statement of the first song and, well, it doesn't really let up until the dying notes of the final song. WRLGD refuse to beat around the bush. You can't help but respect that.
'Queen Of Heavy Metal' and 'I Just Wanna Stick My Head In The Bass Drum' are the best tracks, although the album as a whole is consistent. The only part that truly grates is the opening seconds of the first track. Play it too loud and you'll get cracks in your windows and scars on your, er, tympanic membranes.
You lose the will to live when you first hear How Did It Get To This, but don't despair. Stick with it. There's some good sh*t going on here. We Rock Like Girls Don't could, and possibly should, be the next big thing.
