Album Review: In These Rusted Veins (2010)
For fans of: Deathcore... and VOLUME!!!
Lets get one thing straight right away; Massachusetts band Widow Sunday - Jacob Falconer on vocals, Sean Duffy and Adam Cutler on guitars, Patrick Flaherty on bass, and Darin Moyen on drums - are awesome. This is the best properly heavy album I have heard all year, bar none. Okay, I haven't heard everything, but if anything beats this by a big margin I'll be amazed.
"In These Rusted Veins", produced/engineered by Shane Frisby (Bury Your Dead, Cannae, The Ghost Inside) and mixed/mastered by Peter Rutcho (Revocation, The Year of Our Lord, Ravage) follows their debut 2009 EP “Embracing the Beast Within”. The sound is breath-murderingly heavy; mixing death howls, apocalyptic rhythms, industrial guitars and an overriding sense of anger that would even scare a particularly badass dragon.
But there's more... Mixed in with the ferocity is real melody and a surprising sense of dance-imbued fun. This is music you can headbang and go apesh*t to, but you can also bop to it like a deranged disco diva...although you would look like a cock. Widow Sunday take Fear Factory and DevilDriver, put them in a blender, drink the resulting smoothie and then p*ss all over a very scared Pendulum.
Downsides? Not a lot really. The songs occasionally suffer from repetition and the production is possibly a bit tinny (although that might just be the MP3 compression used on the promo)...but that's about it. I'm not going to pick out any best tracks because they are all great.
"In These Rusted Veins" is an absolute monster of an album that should be in the collection of every avid metaller. Don't worry too much about that deathcore moniker. Widow Sunday cover so many genres, and cover them so well, that this is close to being the metal album that is all things to all people. Buy it. Now.
