THE ROCK REALMS AWARDS 2010 - HEAVY, HARD & MELODIC ROCK ALBUM

This is the most hotly contested of the album awards, purely because it's the main body of music we review at Rock Realms. 2010 wasn't a vintage year for the genre; there were a lot of very good albums but few exceptional ones. Fortunately, a small number came good and gave us what amounts to a reasonably strong line-up. The winner wasn't anywhere near as clear-cut as last year, but it undoubtedly deserves its place at the top of the tree.

Runners-Up are in no particular order.

WINNER: Crazy Lixx - 'New Religion'

Sleazy and rocking through and through...and damned good! There isn't a bad moment on this album. Seriously.
2ND: Unruly Child - 'Worlds Collide'

A superb return to the musical fray from Marcie and the gang. This was so close to glory it isn't true. Well, actually it is.
3RD: Treat - 'Coup De Grace'

This one was looking good for the win on and off throughout the year. An excellent album and thoroughly deserving a place in the top three.
4TH: Shylock - 'RockBuster'

Okay, so the best song is a cover, but who cares? The rest of the album is top-end too.
5TH: Pretty Maids - 'Pandemonium'

Pretty Maids make it 4 out of 5 for Frontiers Records in the top portion of this awards, and rightly so.
RUNNER-UP: Bangalore Choir - 'Cadence'

A great return after a big gap for this legendary band. More should be on the way in 2011 too.
RUNNER-UP: Edge Of Forever - 'Another Paradise'

A strangely contagious album from the Italian outfit. Even the cover of 'Flashdance' kind of makes sense.
RUNNER-UP: First Signal - 'S/T'

Harry Hess' first album since the break up of Harem Scarem isn't a long way behind the best work of his former band.
RUNNER-UP: Giant - 'Promise Land'

is it Giant without Dann Huff? Who cares. This is a very good album and, different vocal style aside, continues the legacy in great style.
RUNNER-UP: Hardcore Circus - 'Wake Up Call'

Not quite sure where this snuck up from, but it's here, it deserves to be here, and that's that. Check it out!
RUNNER-UP: Last Autumn's Dream - 'A Touch Of Heaven'

A collection of brilliant individual songs rather than a brilliant album, but it's still a brilliant album. Do you follow? No? Ah well...
RUNNER-UP: Nelson - 'Lightning Strikes Twice'

Didn't used to like Nelson. Do now. All down to this release.
RUNNER-UP: Newman - 'The Art Of Balance'

Steve had a traumatic year emotionally, but he still managed to pump out this exquisite album packed full of top tracks.
RUNNER-UP: Terry Brock - 'Diamond Blue'

He has already been here with Giant, now he returns with his solo album. It's lucky the Strangeways album was so chilled or that might have been here too!
RUNNER-UP: Wicked Sensation - 'Crystallized'

A bit like Hardcore Circus, this album came from nowhere and demanded its place in the top list. How could we refuse?
