THE ROCK REALMS AWARDS 1990 - 1999

Definitely a heavy decade for us at Rock Realms, the 1990's may have seen hard rock moving into the background but there's no doubt there was still a lot of fabulous music being produced. More than half the albums here could have taken 1st place. It really was THAT hard to decide!

Runners-Up are in no particular order.

ALBUMS OF THE NINETIES
WINNER: Machinehead - 'Burn My Eyes'

The finest metal debut ever. Phenomenal.
2ND: Giant - 'Time To Burn'

A lot less famous than most of the albums on this list. It really doesn't deserve to be.
3RD: Bryan Adams - 'Waking Up The Neighbours'

Yes, I know it has THAT SONG on it but, if you hate it, you can skip it. Every other song is off-the-scale good.
4TH: Megadeth - 'Countdown To Extinction'

This is both a thrash masterclass and a lesson in how to make heavy music accessible. Brilliant.
5TH: Dream Theater - 'Images And Words'

This album more or less defined modern progressive rock and metal.
6TH: Metallica - 'Metallica (Black Album)'

Slightly creepy and over-produced, but still breathtaking. Every song on this album is enormous.
7TH: Metalium - 'Millenium Metal'

This IS power metal. Nothing has been this good since.
8TH: Testament - 'The Gathering'

Want to know what a properly loud album should sound like? This is it.
9TH: Emperor - 'IX Equilibrium'

Not a style of music I normally like, but there's just something about this one I can't get enough of.
10TH: Morbid Angel - 'Domination'

I find most Mordid Angel work to be pretty inaccessible. Not quite sure why this one was so brilliant, but I'm sure glad it was. 'Where The Slime Lives' is a monster track!
RUNNER-UP: Judas Priest - 'Painkiller'

An absolute blinder of an album. I wish all Judas Priest albums were this heavy and enjoyable. MUCH better than concept albums about bearded blokes who allegedly predict the future...
RUNNER-UP: GWAR - 'America Must Be Destroyed'

Just love this album. It's immeasurably silly, but manages to be brilliant too. There are songs called 'Crack In The Egg', 'Ham On The Bone, and 'Gor Gor'. That's all you need to know...
RUNNER-UP: Ozzy Osbourne - 'No More Tears'

Easily my favourite Ozzy album, and with tracks like 'No More Tears', it's easy to see why.
RUNNER-UP: Bad English - 'Backlash'

Journey who?
RUNNER-UP: Overkill - 'Horrorscope'

Overkill are one of the most underrated acts out there. After listening to this you really do have to wonder why.
