FURYON

Written by Jon Wilde, added to Rock Realms 11th March 2010.

Never heard of Furyon? You have now. This is a new UK band who, by rights, will be taking the world by storm very, very soon.

The guys - Matt Mitchell on vocals, Chris Green and Pat “The Shred” Heath on guitars, Lee Farmery on drums and Alex "Nickel" Bowen on bass - came together in the busy music scene of Brighton on England's south coast. Since inception they've sold out the Concorde 2 venue in Brighton, and grabbed themselves a support slot on Winger's UK tour. Kip Winger is very brave taking these guys on tour with him. There's a strong chance they'll be blowing him off stage every night.

I've only had chance to hear a couple of tracks from Furyon so far - you can check them out on the band's MySpace page (link at the bottom of the page) - but there's no doubt this is one of the most exciting UK groups for years. Mixing potent metal and progressive influences with the retro style of classic southern rock, Furyon already have a 'sound'. That sound has caught the attention of US producer Rick Beato (Shinedown, Fozzy), and the band have jetted over to his Atlanta studio to record their debut album Gravitas.

The big factor here is not the producer though; it's the talent of the band members. Lead singer Matt Mitchell has a voice to kill for - gravelly and powerful but as melodious as a hairy, beard toting songbird. Chris Green and Pat “The Shred” Heath really are top-end guitarists. One listen to the Zakk Wylde style pinched harmonics, and the flips between serenity and violence these guys produce, confirms that. The band would be nothing without Lee Farmery's drumming and Alex "Nickel" Bowen's bass though. This is a band held together by every member, making songs where every note and sound is there for a reason.

If ever there was a band to keep an eye on, this is it. Furyon's new album will be out sometime in 2010. Rest assured we will be reviewing here on Rock Realms as soon as is humanly possible. To all intents and purposes, this album is going to kick your and everyone else's a*se.
