KYRBGRINDER
Questions asked by Jon Wilde, added to Rock Realms 20th September 2010.
Kyrbgrinder has a new album "Cold War Technology". We recently reviewed it and thought it was utter brilliance. Time to find out more...
First of all, congratulations on the new album, you must be proud of it?
Kyrbgrinder: Thank you. Yes we are pleased with the result.
How long was the idea for Kyrbgrinder floating around before the band officially came to life?
Kyrbgrinder: Kyrbgrinder has been going for a number of years in different formats. Just that this particular line is the one that produced this sound.
Did you know what sort of music the band was going to play right from the start, or did the sound develop once the original line-up came together?
Kyrbgrinder: We had the idea to play music we enjoy playing and listening to.
How would you describe your sound to someone who foolishly hadn’t heard you before?
Kyrbgrinder: I would say to come to your own conclusion - a melodic mix of rock, metal, funk and progressive.
What other bands influenced the development of Kyrbgrinder's sound?
Kyrbgrinder: Everything from Abba to Zappa.
When did you start work on Cold War Technology, and was the creation of the album hard work, pleasure, or a bit of both?
Kyrbgrinder: We started work on the album in May last year. It was really quite easy to be honest, as it just happened naturally, and a good time was had by all.
How does this album compare to your last release, both in terms of sound and how well you think the result turned out?
Kyrbgrinder: It is far more developed in all areas, better sound and composition.
Did you deliberately set out to make this album different from the last, or do you see this as more of a natural evolution?
Kyrbgrinder: It was a natural evolution.
How does the writing process in Kyrbgrinder work? How would a typical song be created?
Kyrbgrinder: Johanne will come in with either a complete composition, that will be developed. The personalities will be put to them. Or Tom will play a riff that will be developed, and we all throw in ideas about arrangements.
Where do you look for your lyrical and musical writing inspirations?
Kyrbgrinder: Anywhere and everywhere.
Do you do anything special or unusual in the studio to get your sound?
Kyrbgrinder: No - we just pick up our instruments and play - hopefully the musicianship will shine through.
Are there any pieces of kit you and the rest of the band couldn’t live without?
Kyrbgrinder: Albi's Mark Bass amp! It's a monster!!!
Why the decision to cover the Nirvana track?
Kyrbgrinder: Simple - we liked the song.
Are there any other songs you fancy giving the Kyrbgrinder treatment one day?
Kyrbgrinder: Big Brother by Stevie Wonder.
What’s your favourite track on the LP, and is it the sound of the song or the memories behind it that make you love it?
Kyrbgrinder: I don't really have a favourite track to be honest as I like them all for different reasons.
Do you enjoy the whole studio/creative experience, or do you prefer getting up on the live stage?
Kyrbgrinder: I much prefer being on stage, as it has the energy and spontaneity.
What is one of your live shows like? What should fans expect from one of your performances?
Kyrbgrinder: That we give our all, and be prepared to get up on stage and boogie with us!
Any question you love being asked that I’ve missed? If so, what’s the answer?
Kyrbgrinder: NO!
What are you up to once you’ve finished answering these questions?
Kyrbgrinder: I dare not answer that question as it would compromise National Security!! Just go and buy the album and come to a KG show. Peace my friends!!
