> LAHANNYA'S DEFIANCE
Stunning Anglo-German industrial rock quartet Lahannya announce their first 2009 UK dates and details and track listing of the brand new album due this October.
Front woman and Gothic Icon Lahannya has always lived life on her own terms and first came to European attention as a solo artist and club DJ with the release of her debut EP “Drowning” in 2000, which drew favourable comparisons to the likes of Throwing Muses, and the Cocteau Twins and which led to sought-after vocal collaborations with the likes of Combichrist, Greenhaus and, more recently, ASP, with whom her band toured successfully in 2008.
“Drowning” started life as a totally self-produced track on the “Amduscias” compilation of anarchist music from US DIY label Zenflesh. Amidst the aural assault of Noise/Girl and the nightmare soundscapes of Petit Mal, “Drowning” at first appears a highly unusual contribution, but in terms of attitude and philosophy it reflected much of what has gone on to spur the woman’s song writing to this day.
The Lahannya of today is definitely better known now though for her work as Lahannya – The Band – which began with a 2005 collaboration with Lutz Demmler (and the debut album “Shotgun Reality” (Kabuki KAB002CD) and which has since grown into an unconventional marriage of alternative rock and dark electro, but much of today’s music reflects not only a life spent as part of a very fluid techno, gothic, rock scene which had meant a move to London in 2003, but also a music inspired by pop, electro, hard rock and even metal. Lutz and the arrival of Chris Milden and drummer Belle resulted in a honed and finely tuned machine dedicated not only to great recording, such as last EP “Welcome To The Underground” (2008), but also to a live experience which has been honed recently on European and UK jaunts with artists such as Emilie Autumn, ASP, and Moon Kana and a recent appearance on stage at the famous Wave-Gotik-Treffen, in Leipzig in early June.
“Welcome To The Underground” and some hard touring marked the start of a new era for this band. Not only had their sound evolved into industrial rock with plenty of metal attitude, but thematically, it now introduces the listener to the ‘World Of The Underground’, a haven for misfits and non-conformists ostracised from the surveillance society that rules with an iron fist over-ground. This brave new Britain and its underground opposition continues to be the setting for Lahannya’s second album “Defiance” which proves to be the bands darkest and most aggressive sounding release to date. With hard hitting anthems such as “Burn” and “Sick And Tired”, live favourites such as “Interference” and rousing, closing anthem “Our War”, “Defiance” is going to be a watershed for a band that has earned its spurs on the underground and will now come up from that underground fighting on all fronts….
“Defiance” is set for release through Kabuki Records / Plastic Head on October 14th.
