THE FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE: 27th May 2011
> BRITISH MELODIC ROCK FINEST – AIRRACE RETURN WITH "BACK TO THE START"
Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of AIRRACE comeback album entitled « Back to the Start » on July 1st in Europe and August 23rd in North America.
Mostly known in the Hard Rock circles for being the band that saw the musical debut from John Bonham’s son Jason on the band’s debut album for Atco « Shaft of Light », AIRRACE was instead brainchild of former More guitarist Laurie Mansworth.
"Shaft of Light", produced by Beau Hill (Ratt, Winger, Fiona etc) received rave reviews when released in October 1984, showing a combination of breezy melodies and snappy choruses which moved journalist Derek Oliver to pronounce in the pages of Kerrang! that anyone who didn’t like Airrace “ought to be shot”.
Although the band got to play support slots with Queen, AC/DC and Meat Loaf, Airrace crash-landed in the summer of 1985.
It took a 25th anniversary re-issue of « Shaft of Light » to reunite the band in 2009. To celebrate the record’s expanded re-release, the original members Mansworth, Bonham with singer Keith Murrell and keyboardist Toby Sadler recruited two new members – second guitarist Dean Howard (formerly of T’Pau) and bassist Dave Boyce (ex-Samson, among others) – to hit the road, playing gigs with Thunder, Tesla, Winger and more, in addition to headlining their own shows. When Jason Bonham departed, the occupation of his drum stool by The Outfield’s Simon Dawson brought them vital stability.
It was the overwhelmingly positive reaction to an appearance at annual melodic rock all-dayer the Firefest in October 2009 that convinced Airrace to take things more seriously. Describing what the wild scenes of that day, Fireworks magazine proposed the distinct possibility that Airrace were “the best opening band we’ve ever had at a Firefest”.
With Toby Sadler, who resides in Germany, unable to commit to playing more regularly, Airrace hired a new keyboard player called Chris Williams, re-recruiting original bass player Jim Reid as a successor to Dave Boyce.
The above grouping can be heard on « Back to the Start », the long-awaited second album from Airrace. Produced by Mansworth, it’s a notch heavier than «Shaft Of Light» yet continues to offer all of the group’s trademarks, including über-memorable hooks and the exquisite singing of Keith Murrell, recently named at #20 in Classic Rock Presents AOR magazine’s list of the Top 40 AOR Vocalists Of All Time. Guitarist Laurie Mansworth said "We had a great time making this record, and we are very happy with the results. I feel this album captures the Airrace sound and is closer to how we sound live than the first album. We are also very excited about working with our new label Frontiers who have been very supportive throughout the making of Back to the Start”.
As good as anything the Yanks have to offer, we think that you’ll agree: « Back to the Start » is well worth the wait!
"Back to the Start" includes the following songs: Keep On Going; Two Of A Kind; When Baby; Call Me Anytime; So Long; Back To Start; Just One Kiss; Wrong Way Out; One Step Ahead; Enough Of Your Loving; Better Believe It; What More Do You Want From Me?

> NITZINGER KISS OF THE MUDMAN
Kiss Of The Mudman is the 2007 album from Texan rock ‘n’ roll legend, Nitzinger.
Says Nitzinger of the inspiration behind the album: “The name and idea for ‘Kiss Of The Mudman came to me in a dream. Hundreds of people dressed in togas, and in Roman attire, were sitting and lounging on two huge steps facing each other, with me and several friends walking down the middle towards a 50-foot tall Samurai, in brass and green patina.
“We walked on to a wooden deck next to a sea of mud. The mudman and I were facing each other, while my friends were coaxing me, ‘Go ahead, go ahead’. The mudman grabbed my shoulders and did a double back flip into the sea of mud. As we sank in the mud, he placed his lips on mine and blew my lungs full of mud – I then woke up!”
John Nitzinger has been a worldwide force behind rock and roll since the 1970s. His song writing style is unique and he is known for his contribution to the development of the signature sound of “Texas Rock and Blues”.
Proof of his Texas legendary status, Nitzinger was one of the first four artists to be inducted into Buddy Magazine’s Texas Tornado’s Hall of Fame in 1978, “as a Texas Tornado of Guitar, one of the best musicians in Texas, perhaps in the world.”
During the ‘70s, John wrote half of five albums with the rock band, Bloodrock. He was awarded a Gold Album from Capitol Records for “Bloodrock 2” and was soon signed to Capitol on a solo venture. Two classics were released; the self titled “Nitzinger” and “Nitzinger One Foot In History”. The hit single “Louisiana Cockfight” is considered to be a classic.
John took to touring his solo albums and shared the stage with legendary artists such as, Leon Russell, BB King, Sly & The Family Stone and Freddie King. Moving on internationally, he performed at the Mar Y Sol International Pop Festival in Puerto Rico with world renowned artists such as The Allman Brothers Band, Alice Cooper, BB King, The J. Geils Band, The Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McLaughlin, Emerson Lake & Palmer, among others. John’s classic, “Jelly Roll Blues” stole the show and became an instant hit for Atlantic Records.
In 1976, John signed with 20th Century Fox and music mogul, Russ Regan to produce Nitzinger’s album, “Live Better Electrically”. This album reached the charts with two hit singles, “Are You With Me” and “Yellow Dog”.
In 1980, Carl Palmer broke away from Emerson Lake and Palmer to form a new group, 1PM, which included John as a major song writer and guitarist. They signed to Areola Europe Records and released the single “Dynamite”, increasing John’s popularity in the overseas market.
In 1982, John joined forces with Alice Cooper on the “Special Forces” international and USA tours as guitarist. After touring, John wrote, with Alice Cooper, the album “Zipper Catches Skin”. The album was released on Warner Bros. Records featuring John’s “I Like Girls”, a great success in Europe and Asia.
With his return from the road, John released an album on the label of Record Heaven, “Going Back To Texas”. This album contains thirteen of his classic songs such as, “Louisiana Cockfight”, “Jelly Roll Blues”, “Yellow Dog”, “L.A. Texas Boy”, and “Control”.
In 2008, John was awarded Fort Worth Weekly’s Hall Of Fame music award.
> RUINS OF EARTH EXPLOSIVE SOPHOMORE EP AND TOURING TO FOLLOW!
Southern metallers 'Ruins Of Earth' are quickly carving a prominent name for themselves within the UK metal scene. By delivering shattering live shows that illustrate boundless energy and earnest passion, the driven quintet are intent on pushing themselves into the national arena and are all set to destroy every flea-pit along the way.
Ruins Of Earth have already extensively toured throughout the UK, impressively notching up over 150 shows in a little over a year, and in the process, bagging tour slots with the likes of Viatrophy, Shadow Law, Osmium and Plague of Ashitaka. ROE’s shows are sweat-drenched affairs that are both full-blooded and full-hearted. The Thrashcore crew will hit the road yet again this Summer in support of their bone-crushing 'Misguided Lifeforms' EP.
Ruins Of Earth’s debut offering ‘Ashes of the Ocean’ racked up national critical acclaim in Metal Hammer, Powerplay, Rocksound and Zero Tolerance, and tracks from the record also picked up heavy radio rotation with XFM Rock Show and Total Rock Radio. Now fully equipped with an explosive follow-up in the shape of 'Misguided Lifeforms', the young guns are set to raise the bar once again. 'Misguided Lifeforms' is loaded with soaring melodic passages and brutal breakdowns, weaving technically tinged thrash metal with gritty deathcore. Ruins of Earth make their way from melody to brutality with practiced ease, orchestrated and solidified through alluring lyrical content. The five-piece display their ability to fuse and meld genres, delivering memorable and intelligent songs distilled from a range of influences stemming from The Black Dahlia Murder and Cult of Luna to the likes of Sylosis.
Balancing passion with aggression, whilst maintaining their renowned high level of musicianship, Ruins of Earth bring fire and spirit to the stage in support of their aggressive music, a nostalgic feat all too missed in today's metal bands who seem to lack the same passion and energy. Through their live shows, ROE display their ability to draw from a vast array of styles, setting themselves apart from other bands restricted to a recycled musical vocabulary. Establishing themselves as a band “not to be missed live,” Ruins of Earth are destined for great things in 2011.
‘MISGUIDED LIFEFORMS’ IS AVAILABLE FOR FREE FROM 8th AUGUST 2011

> JOHNNY ENGSTROM BAND MAGNETIC FORCE
Swedish based progressive hard rock/metal band Johnny Engstrom Band has recently released it's third cd 'Magnetic Force' on Alienation Records. The Chicago born (but raised in Karlskoga, Sweden) guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Johnny Engstrom formed his band in 2008 (just before the release of the debut cd 'Analyse My Dream'). The band's second cd 'From Birth To Chaos' dropped in 2009, and marked a big improvement in the band's songwriting and production skills.
On the new 2011 release 'Magnetic Force' Engstrom and his band have created a powerful Progressive Rock/Metal hybrid that brings to mind groups such as Dream Theater, Rush, Saga and Evergrey. Lyrically this a "concept" album dealing with UFOs, alien abductions and 'X-Files'-type themes. Dark, heavy and menacing (but still very melodic). A must for any fan of modern progressive music. The cd is now available through Wishing Well Entertainment (http://www.wishingwellonline.com/) and Amazon.
More information can be found on the band's MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/johnnyengstromband
> JOHN WETTON TO RELEASE NEW SOLO ALBUM IN JULY
Frontiers Records is proud to announce the release of the sixth solo album by esteemed British singer/songwriter John Wetton; RAISED IN CAPTIVITY is due out on July 1st in Europe and the 12th in North America. The album was recorded in Los Angeles during a brief break between touring commitments and is produced and mixed by multi-instrumentalist Billy Sherwood (Yes, World Trade, Yoso). The new offering finds Wetton teaming up with current and former musical partners, including some of the biggest names from the British music scene over the past four decades: Genesis’ Steve Hackett, King Crimson’s Robert Fripp, Deep Purple’s Steve Morse and many more. Please see below for a full track listing.
“Raised In Captivity” celebrates yet another milestone in an extraordinary life, a stunning collection of songs reinforcing a career of over 40 years during which John Wetton has created a legacy as one of the greatest singers, musicians and songwriters ever. Respected worldwide by fans and musical peers alike, Wetton’s career included a significant period of time in the early eighties when he was the biggest selling singer in the world. Once again characterised by the emotional impact of the material, a necessary component in all Wetton’s creativity, “Raised In Captivity” continues an unrivalled career which has brought inspiration to millions worldwide.
Of the new album and choice of producer, Wetton commented, “The decision to record in Los Angeles with Billy Sherwood was entirely mine. I wanted the chaotic urban inspiration, edge and energy to juxtapose the natural beauty that California provides. I also knew that Billy Sherwood would provide the musical and technical ability to record quickly, with ultra high energy and superb production quality.” The material was written in a variety of ways, such as “Goodbye Elsinore” was written on the Denmark-Sweden sea ferry en route to a Vilde Frang concert and “The Devil and the Opera House” is co-written with King Crimson collaborator Richard Palmer-James. The album’s finale is “Mighty Rivers”, featuring the enigmatic Dutch soprano Anneke Van Giersbergen and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.
John Wetton has been a member of several prominent British bands. After two albums with Family he joined King Crimson from 1972 to 1974, before working with Roxy Music and Uriah Heep. In 1977, with former Crimson band mate and drummer Bill Bruford, he co-founded U.K., which also featured guitarist Allan Holdsworth and keyboardist/violinist Eddie Jobson. After U.K.’s demise, Wetton turned his attentions to a solo career.
In 1982, Wetton became part of the supergroup Asia, together with Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and Geoff Downes. This “fab four” of progressive pop would rule radio and record sales, with their debut album becoming the biggest selling album of the year and yielding the worldwide hit “Heat of the Moment.” Wetton remained prolific with more solo studio albums and several collaborative efforts over the years.
In 2002 at a John Wetton fan convention held in Allentown, PA, he started working with Geoff Downes again. This collaboration ultimately resulted a series of iCon studio and live albums and the in the highly-anticipated reunion of Asia’s original lineup, bringing about two successful new studio albums: PHOENIX in 2008 and OMEGA in 2010.
John Wetton RAISED IN CAPTIVITY track listing: 1. Lost For Words (featuring Steve Morse) 2. Raised In Captivity (featuring Robert Fripp) 3. Goodbye Elsinore (featuring Steve Hackett) 4. The Last Night Of My Life (featuring Alex Machacek) 5. We Stay Together (bonus track) 6. The Human Condition (featuring Tony Kaye) 7. Steffi’s Ring (featuring Geoff Downes) 8.
