Sententia - The Center In The SandIn Search of Balance...

In 2006, drummer, Dede Booth, journeyed the depths of the human mind through her own clatter of external observation and internal awareness. The result, the formation of Sententia where she would switch musical roles and let her vocals and guitar melodies drive her progressive influences into a melodically gothic light. “Fruition” was their first release, an EP that explored breakdown and yearning for the unattainable.

“Unattainable”...the thought has stuck with Dede. Curiosity became obsession, and Dede wondered if the impossible could ever be attained. This impossibility to her was the idea of perfect balance. Known to have a Buddhist mind, even during the darkest hours that night can bring, the concept of Sententia’s first full length album emerged. “I became obsessed with the idea of balance; the idea of being completely centered within perfection,” says Dede. “But what if in that search, your obsession took you to complete catastrophe? What if everything ended up becoming disharmonious, and what would happen if you realized you could never get to that perfect center?” Staring at a microscopic grain of sand in order to find its center became the metaphorical influence in Sententia’s record, and in 2009, 11 tracks were recorded, and an album, “The Center in the Sand”, was self-released. Though lyrically heavy, and atmospherically melancholy, the music is melodically driven to keep a person hopeful of a positive outcome. Since its international release, the record has received much attention, with Dede being described as “a serious musician with a mesmerizing voice and enough inner demons flowing from her lyrics to keep a professional therapist on retainer.” (Craig Hartranft - Dangerdog.com, February, 2010)

Whether Dede is joined by other musicians or she is playing the role of every band member, Sententia is always in demand of what lies ahead. Now approaching 2011, and joined with a full cast of band mates, Sententia is planning the follow up to their debut record, a conceptual work about second chances and the afterlife. Sententia continues to search, and encourages you to search with them. The band will always take you one step further as they explore these passionate realms and push themselves both musically and emotionally. Starting here is only the beginning.

Press Quotes:

“While Booth’s lyrics cast some long shadows, a certain folky warmth draws you into her dark laments on inner struggle. References to Mazzy Star and Portishead immediately come to mind.” - Rick Tvedt, Progression (May, 2010)

“Tight but liquid drums and driving acoustic guitars propel the rhythm, fuzzy shoegazy electrics adding colorful dynamics to the choruses, and doeful, tantalizing vocals.” - Tony Mellor, The Noise (April, 2010)

“Dark melancholic progressive rock that sounds a bit experimental and actually reminds a lot of Porcupine Tree and Ozric Tentacles, with smooth calm melodic vocalwork of the band’s female singer...for the open minded progrock fan definitely an album to check out.” - Glabor Kleinbloesem, Strutter Zine (December, 2009)

“Moody, brooding, dark and mysterious, Sententia creates an ethereal mindset on their new cd ‘The Center in the Sand’...Dede Booth has a mesmerizing voice that lilts listeners into a web of blissful euphoria.” - Douglas Sloan, The Metronome (November, 2009)
