DVD Review: The Wall: Live In Berlin (2011)

For fans of: Rock Opera

Roger Waters - The Wall: Live In BerlinThis is a pretty damn easy review to be honest. Let's start with the press release:

"Roger Waters’ seminal concert of The Wall before a live audience of 250,000 in Berlin and international live broadcast viewership of ½ billion is, arguably, the greatest concert event in history. Staged on vacant terrain between Potsdamer Platz and the Brandenburg Gate in the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall, it marks a momentous cultural and political landmark."

This is a re-release of the vast production featuring Roger and a ton of special high-profile guests (The Scorpions, Bryan Adams, Cyndi Lauper, Van Morrison and more) alongside a cast of hundreds for a full costume performance of Pink Floyd's "The Wall". It took place back in 1990, but gets one of a number of 2nd chances in 2011, this time with a couple of live CDs in tow.

Not all the songs on the DVD are 100% successful. Let's face it, Pink Floyd songs are at their best when Roger Waters AND Dave Gilmour are involved. But there's no denying the sheer magnitude of it all. This is not a DVD to watch for the brilliance of the music, the big selling point here is watching it and marveling at the fact they pulled it off. The sheer scale of it all is ridiculous.

In Summation:

If you don't own this already and have even a vague interest in Pink Floyd or crazily proportioned concerts, it's a worthy purchase. I can't promise you'll want to watch it more than once, but that one time may change your expectation of concerts forever.
